Hyper-specific Birding

Reading Time: < 1 minute

First, I would like to describe exactly what I mean when I say hyper-specific birding. I do not necessarily mean a hyper-specific location, but rather birding during another hyper-specific activity. So, I often get bits of birding in during other activities or keep track of what birds I see during that time. This could be obvious things like birding while at the beach or the farmer’s market, or extremely specific things like birding while running a 5k race or while minigolfing.

These hyper-specific times of birding have been a lot of fun to track what I have seen during that time, location, or just while doing that activity. Almost a yard list, but while doing other very specific things. I specified minigolfing earlier since that is what I did this evening. I started my list of birds that I have seen during a round of mini golf. Yes, inherently, this is a bit silly and not necessarily tremendously helpful to scientific development, but it’s fun because it is silly and because it is very specific.

My recommendation is to try it out and give it a shot, to put a lot less pressure on the act of birding. Speaking from personal experiences, sometimes I can put too much pressure on myself to see something good or get a large number of species in a day instead of remembering why I enjoy birding so much, because it’s fun and a challenge. This hyper-specific birding has brought that fun back to the surface. Yes, it’s silly, but that’s what makes it fun.

6 species & shot a 45 – certainly could have been a better showing but that’s life.
